Always somebody is going to give me some attention, and somebody is going to ignore or reject me; and why is that so, people have tastes.\u00a0 I like one wig and I don\u2019t like the other.\u00a0 I like Donna\u2019s little hat\u2014she doesn\u2019t, but she wore it so that she didn\u2019t have to launder her hair, roll it up and get it all pretty; you see, I told her she could just cover it up with a hat and nobody\u2019d see it.<\/p>\n
Somebody going to approve of me?\u00a0 Yeah!<\/p>\n
Is somebody going to disapprove of me?<\/p>\n
You better believe it because there\u2019s going to be different behavior on my part from time to time; and the other person has maybe different taste at different times also.\u00a0 The same person is going to approve of me one day and disapprove of me another\u2014you\u2019ve all experienced that haven\u2019t you?\u00a0 Who cares, it\u2019s just their opinion.\u00a0 So I will never escape disapprove while I live and have a state of being.<\/p>\n
Now we could postulate some great state where everybody had the same taste, but I wouldn\u2019t want to be there, would you?<\/p>\n
So I like being in a place where there are different tastes, and if there is different tastes, there\u2019s bound to be what?–Some approval and some disapproval from time to time.<\/p>\n
(It would be a funny world if all the guys in the world liked just one woman.)<\/p>\n
It\u2019s bad enough when only two like the same woman.\u00a0 If they all did, it would be unbearable, no doubt.\u00a0 Maybe all the rest of them will die honey and you can find out.<\/p>\n
But do you see that we can set up any kind of \u201cideal\u201d which is only an illusion\u2014an illusion we struggle for?\u00a0 Is there such a state as being without sensation and still be conscious.<\/p>\n
(No.)<\/p>\n
Then, obviously you\u2019re going to have sensation\u2014approval is when I sense somebody says, \u201cI like you\u201d or \u201cthat\u2019s a pretty suit\u201d or \u201cI like your weird tie\u201d or \u201cI like your hair\u201d or \u201cI like your behavior\u201d.\u00a0 It is a matter of people expressing their taste.\u00a0 It expresses absolutely nothing about you or me.\u00a0 Did you ever realize that?\u00a0 Somebody says, \u201cI like you.\u201d\u00a0 They\u2019re only telling you something about their taste; they are not describing one iota about you.\u00a0 Don\u2019t get the big head over it because all they\u2019re telling you is about their taste, not a thing about you.<\/p>\n
They walk up and say, \u201cI can\u2019t stand you.\u201d\u00a0 They\u2019re not saying one derogatory thing about you; they\u2019re only expressing their taste.\u00a0 They haven\u2019t said a thing about you, and we take it as though it was something serious\u2014something \u201cright\u201d\u2014something that\u2019s \u201ctrue\u201d.\u00a0 \u00a0I feel everybody has perfect freedom to express their taste.<\/p>\n
So if somebody walked up to you and said.\u00a0 \u201cI love you.\u201d\u00a0 All they\u2019re doing is telling you they have a taste that they approve of you at the moment.\u00a0 It\u2019s a statement of their state, not a thing about you.<\/p>\n
And if I say, \u201cYou are the loveliest creature in the world.\u201d\u00a0 I haven\u2019t told you a thing about you, I\u2019ve only told you about me.\u00a0 You see, we\u2019re always talking about ourselves when we make statements; and other people are only talking about themselves.<\/p>\n
We have a form of insanity called \u201cideas of reference\u201d.\u00a0 Did you ever hear that everything that is said is thought to be about me; and then I get all pushed out of shape over it\u2014it is my particular brand of insanity?<\/p>\n
She says, \u201cI can\u2019t stand him.\u201d\u00a0 She\u2019s just expressing her taste; she\u2019s not talking about him at all.\u00a0 She\u2019s only talking about her taste.\u00a0 And if I have \u201cideas of reference\u201d which is a very severe form of insanity, I assume she\u2019s talking about him.\u00a0 She hasn\u2019t said one thing about him, she\u2019s only told me about her taste at that particular moment\u2014tomorrow she may like him, I don\u2019t know.<\/p>\n
Like a while ago I challenged her a little bit and she didn\u2019t approve, and in a little while I told her she knew everything and she said, \u201cNow you\u2019re seeing it like it is\u2014I feel wonderful\u201d\u00a0 So she only told me something about herself\u2014not a thing in the world about him or me.<\/p>\n
Is there anybody can tell you anything about Jean Jones\u2014I can tell you my taste around you, Jean\u2014she can tell you her taste around you\u2014he can tell you his taste around you.\u00a0 Nobody can tell you a thing about you.\u00a0 But if you\u2019re insane, you have \u201cideas of reference\u201d; and you immediately jump to the conclusion because somebody else has a taste, that it somehow relates to you.\u00a0 Nobody can tell you one thing in the world about you because there\u2019s nobody in that skin but you.\u00a0 The rest of them can only talk about their taste regarding the subject.\u00a0 Everybody\u2019s got different taste.<\/p>\n

They\u2019re expressing their opinion.\u00a0 Donna may not see it as a problem at all\u2014she just likes men.\u00a0 (laughter)<\/p>\n
(So you mean nobody really knows Donna.)<\/p>\n
No, not even her physician.\u00a0 You can only express your viewpoint, your opinion, your taste\u2014you cannot say one thing for or against Donna because you don\u2019t know one thing about her.<\/p>\n
And if I am all upset with the idea that your opinion and your taste are derogatory or, maybe, even approval of me; I, of course, have \u201cideas of reference\u201d.\u00a0 \u00a0I\u2019m thinking that I\u2019m the whole center of the world.<\/p>\n
(But actually you can at least be aware, look and listen to see what\u2019s being said about you, Donna or someone else and then you can tell __________)<\/p>\n
I\u2019m really not interested.\u00a0 I would only be jumping to a conclusion.\u00a0 I can only hear what they\u2019re saying\u2014and that\u2019s all I need to know.\u00a0 I have no urge to doubt or to analyze because I\u2019m in a condition of \u201cnot knowing\u201d.<\/p>\n
But you see we have an urge to say we know \u201cwhat\u2019s going on\u201d in the other person\u2014you only know \u201cwhat\u2019s going on\u201d in you\u2014maybe\u2014and you may not even know that.\u00a0 But you\u2019ll never know about the others.\u00a0 You can only know that it was said that Donna was a slob.<\/p>\n
I heard a word\u2014that\u2019s all I know.\u00a0 I heard a person expressing words that reportedly was their opinion\u2014only their opinion.\u00a0 Ten minutes later they said something entirely different\u2014like she was a living doll.\u00a0 And, of course, I agree with them, then, because that just happens to be my taste.<\/p>\n
It\u2019s just taste and nobody can express a thing in the world about you.\u00a0 They can only express their taste\u2014the taste they are experiencing at the moment.\u00a0 \u00a0So could anybody say anything derogatory about you?\u00a0 No, because they don\u2019t know anything about you.<\/p>\n
If somebody says, \u201cYou\u2019re a terrible person\u201d, does that make it \u201cso\u2019 or is that only expressing their viewpoint.\u00a0 If Darrell says you\u2019re a terrible wife, does that make it \u201cso\u201d or is that just expressing his taste.<\/p>\n
